As the last fall leaves come down and the evenings get colder, Raleigh starts getting ready for the season. Christmas lights go up across the city, and the calendar fills with festivities for every age. Whether you want a classic tradition or something new this year, here are some of the best holiday events in Raleigh.
When You Want Big and Bright
Kick off the season on Friday, November 20, at the Downtown Raleigh Tree Lighting in Moore Square. Shop the holiday vendor market from 5:30 to 8 p.m., then stick around to watch the tree light up.
Come back the next morning for the 82nd Raleigh Christmas Parade at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 21. Marching bands and giant balloons fill a 1.4-mile route through downtown, so bring a thermos of coffee and get there early for a good spot.
That same night, the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival opens at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary. All-new lantern displays glow nightly from 6 to 10 p.m. through January 10, with cultural performances on the main stage.
When Guests Are in Town
Once family and friends arrive, these slower nights give everyone a break from the crowds. Thanksgiving week brings the NC Symphony’s Cirque Holiday Pops at Meymandi Concert Hall. Acrobats fly overhead while the orchestra plays holiday classics from November 25 through 28, making it an easy plan when guests are in town.
For something more low-key, hop aboard The Great Raleigh Trolley for its Cocoa & Caroling ride, a sing-along for all ages that leaves from Tap Yard Raleigh. December evenings fill up fast, so book early.
When You Want to Shop Local
Gift lists get a lot more fun when you’re supporting local businesses. Christmas at North Hills lights its 41-foot tree on Saturday, November 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. Santa arrives, live entertainment fills North Hills Commons, and a vendor village makes it easy to check a few names off your gift list or pick out handmade decorations.
Remember: the Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday. Shop Local Raleigh is a great place to find independent shops worth a visit.
Celebrate the Season at The Mallory
With holiday events in Raleigh filling nearly every weekend, it’s easy to start to feel festive. A lot of the action is happening close to The Mallory: downtown is a 16-minute drive, and North Hills is about 10 minutes away. After a chilly parade morning, warm up by the clubroom fireplace with a cup from the coffee bar, or invite new friends over for a round in the duckpin bowling lounge. Schedule a tour of The Mallory and start planning your holiday season here.
